Post LLETZ procedure

What can I expect after a LLETZ procedure?

Most women feel fine after the procedure and return to work the next day though some women need another day to fully recover. It’s important to follow our post-operative advice and be kind to yourself.

Will I need painkillers after a LLETZ procedure?

You may experience mild discomfort to crampy period-like pain after the procedure.

We recommend that you take routine pain killers like:

  • Panadol (2 tablets every 4-6 hours, maximum 8 tablets per day)
  • or Nurofen 400 mg (every 6-8 hours with food, maximum three times per day).

Please don’t take Nurofen if you are allergic or have asthma.

Will there be any unusual vaginal discharge?

You may experience some blood-stained or watery discharge mixed with brown-black residue, which is expected after this procedure. The dark residue is related to the medicine used at the time of the procedure.

The discharge may last for up to 4 weeks but should be decreasing in quantity and without any unusual smell.

Do I have to avoid any particular activities?

Please avoid the following for four weeks to prevent infection at the surgery site:

  • Swimming
  • Intercourse
  • Tampons

Strenuous exercise

Please avoid strenuous exercise for four weeks to avoid the risk of bleeding after surgery:

  • Gym workout
  • Running
  • Jogging
  • Cycling
  • Pilates
  • Yoga

Air travel

We advise you to avoid air travel for the first two weeks after surgery.
